West Nile Virus
What is it?
Causes an infection that is spread by certain species of mosquitoes that become infected when they bite infected birds. Most of the time there are no symptoms. In rare cases it can lead to inflammation of the brain and spinal cord.
Symptoms
Fever, tiredness, headache, body aches, and skin rashes with swollen lymph nodes.
Transmission
The virus can be spread through an organ transplant or a blood transfusion. In some cases, an infected mother can spread it to her baby during birth. Anyone exposed to mosquitoes can become infected.
