Plague

What is it?

Plague is a zoonotic disease circulating mainly among small animals and their fleas. The bacteria Yersinia pestis can also infect humans.

Symptoms

Include the sudden onset of fever, chills, head and body-aches and weakness, vomiting and nausea.

Transmission

People usually get plague from being bitten by a rodent flea that is carrying the plague bacterium or by handling an infected animal.

Poliomyelitis (Polio)

What is it?

Poliomyelitis (polio) is a highly infectious viral disease, which mainly affects young children.

Symptoms

Initial Symptoms of polio include fever, fatigue, headache, vomiting, stiffness in the neck, and pain in the limbs.

Transmission

The virus is transmitted through contaminated food and water, and multiplies in the intestine, from where it can invade the nervous system.
